  Singular and Joint Pursuits

I love Sudoku.  I do.  My current goal is to be able to solve puzzles without writing the answers..i.e.; entirely in my head.  Gotta be good brain exercise, right?  I remember playing these silly puzzles in Dell puzzle mags back in the 70s, when they were called "Number Place."  Glad they've shown up again.  I play Scrabble or some arcade-style game with my Gameboy sporadically, mostly when waiting at some bureaucratic office somewhere.  People seem to find it amusing that a middle-aged lady enjoys playing with a Gameboy.  A friend has a favourite story involving her daughter and I, with our corresponding Leapfrog and Gameboy.  Sue-boo, driving us to lunch, looked in her rearview mirror to find me playing with the Leapfrog and little Livia playing with my Gameboy...a 50 year old and a 5 year old with the same look of concentration.

I also enjoy computer gaming, though I'm not really a fan of creepy stuff jumping out at me that I have to kill.  Instead, and perhaps entirely predictably, I prefer Adventure games, a la Myst.
Killing stuff is easy, figuring out a way out of a bad situation is FAR more fun for me.  See, all you really need to know about me is that if it engages my MIND, I will more than likely appreciate whatever IT is.

Word or dice games are my preference when playing with others - even when playing with myself, for that matter.   Peter and I enjoy Boggle, Scrabble, Word Yahtzee, Farkel (the dice game most often seen at Renaissance Faires), and others.  We do like to make up our own rules, though, playing Boggle, for example, without a time limit and individually.  In otherwords, we shake up the letters, each of us then takes a turn in finding every possible word combination, then we read our lists aloud and cross off all duplicates.  We don't keep score with any of these games but Yahtzee...guess it's not important to either of us.  Winning doesn't matter so much as the knowing.

I also like to watch curling (I'm a BIG fan), and play Open Bocce Ball, though the grass in the yard rivals that of the lumpy yard at Tofte for unexpected hops and leaps.  So far, I haven't found anyplace I can rollerblade in town...and no, I'm not aBOUT to go to the skate park and dodge crazy kids on skateboards.  I really AM too old for that.  I've been considering getting back into sailing by finding a captain who needs some good floating ballast, and I noticed the other day that there's a woman's sculling crew here in town...something I used to enjoy very much.  I have absolutely promised myself that I will learn sea kayaking now that I'm back amongst the semi-archipelago of the San Juans, so hopefully this summer will see that happen!
